Engines

The engine is the heart of an airplane, powering its ability to departure, fly, and land safely. There are several types of engines used in airplanes, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Today, we will discuss the different types of engines used in airplanes, their importance, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

Piston Engine

Piston engines are also known as reciprocating engines. They are the most common type of engines used in general aviation aircraft. A piston engine works by burning fuel in a combustion chamber, which creates pressure that moves the pistons up and down. This movement is then translated into the rotational movement of a propeller.

Advantages of Piston Engines:

  • They are reliable and have a long service life

  • They are fuel-efficient and have lower operating costs

  • They are relatively simple to operate and maintain

Disadvantages of Piston Engines:

  • They have limited power output compared to other engine types

  • They are not suitable for high-altitude operations

Turboprop Engine

A turboprop engine is a type of gas turbine engine that drives a propeller. It works by compressing air and mixing it with fuel in a combustion chamber, which creates high-pressure gases that drive a turbine. The turbine then drives a propeller, which produces thrust.

Advantages of Turboprop Engines:

  • They are more powerful than piston engines

  • They are more suitable for high-altitude operations

  • They are more reliable than piston engines

Disadvantages of Turboprop Engines:

  • They are less fuel-efficient than piston engines

  • They are more complex to operate and maintain

  • They are more expensive than piston engines

Turbofan Engine

A turbofan engine is a type of gas turbine engine that is used in commercial airliners. It works by compressing air and mixing it with fuel in a combustion chamber, which creates high-pressure gases that drive a turbine. The turbine then drives a fan, which produces thrust.

Advantages of Turbofan Engines:

  • They are more fuel-efficient than other engine types

  • They are quieter than other engine types

  • They are more powerful than piston engines

Disadvantages of Turbofan Engines:

  • They are more complex to operate and maintain

  • They are more expensive than other engine types

There are several types of engines used in airplanes, each with its advantages and disadvantages. It is important for pilots to understand the different types of engines used in airplanes and their characteristics to operate an aircraft safely and efficiently.

What kind of engines does the aircraft normally use?

As far as I know, airplanes can use a piston engine, it is normally used in small aircraft, for example, C152.

Turboprop engines are generally used in regional aviation, for example, ATR.

A turbofan engine is used in domestic and international flights. A320 and 737.

Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages involving costs and power.
