Runway Excursion

DEFINITION

A runway excursion occurs when an aircraft accidentally departs the runway in use during takeoff or landing procedure. A veer off could happen through the sides or end of the runway.

SCENARIOS

- A departing aircraft can’t become airborne or reject the takeoff over the runway.

- A landing aircraft is unable to stop over the runway’s length.

- An aircraft taking off, rejecting takeoff or landing veers off the runway. - A pilot incorrectly steers the aircraft.

MITIGATION

- Accurate and timely reporting of ambient conditions by ATC, especially wind direction, variation and runway conditions. Precise communication. - Good Flight planning. - Correct handling techniques.

- Effective decision making and technique for rejecting a landing soon after initial touchdown or for rejecting a takeoff from a speed close to or of V1.

EXCURSION VS OVERRUN

A runway excursion is a veer-off from the runway’s surface. A runway overrun happens when the aircraft fails to stop within the runway limits and overshoots the opposite threshold.

The runway excursion is sometimes done on purpose to avoid a ground collision. But normally it happens due to problems such as landing gear malfunction, hard landing, collapsed landing gear, slippery runway, and engine problems.
